Brief Description

Contribute to the Performance Based Oversight process as Technical Specialist to ensure intelligence on industry performance in order to support with regulatory oversight on the basis of safety performance. Assess competence of licensed operational staff at allocated units for the renewal or revalidation of ATS licenses, ratings and associated endorsements. Co-operate with other functional areas of AAA or SARG to achieve optimum safety regulation.
Assist when required in the incident investigation process by participating as a member of an investigations team.
Working collaboratively with others to achieve the goals of AAA by achieving performance objectives agreed with the Principal Inspector ATM.

Air Traffic Controllers don’t have to physically ‘see’ an aircraft either visually or via radar to control it – Procedural control is controlling, applying separation, based on pilot or aircraft reported positions, levels and times.

Brief Description
Accountable to the Principal Inspector ATM, the Inspector ATS is responsible for the regulatory oversight of ATM arrangements at allocated ANSPs as instructed to the CAA by the UK Government.
Key Skills
Possess extensive knowledge and experience of the Civil ATM regulatory framework in the UK including appropriate ICAO, CAA and EU publications, directives, regulations, legislation, and their application. Have a detailed understanding of ATM Operations in the UK and the safety regulatory requirements that apply to the provision and operation of ATM systems and services. Possess a high standard of investigative techniques to enable evidence to be gathered from ATS staff for oversight audits and able to demonstrate good understanding of the principles of Safety and Quality Management. Have sound understanding of the principles of Safety and Quality Management. Have a confident but approachable style, be comfortable in communicating in a range of formats, and be able to present issues and supporting arguments in a concise yet comprehensive manner.
Entry Routes
Must have/ have held appropriate ATC Rating. Practical experience of the provision of ATM Services and knowledge of ATS Systems in accordance with a Safety Management System is essential. The ability to assess and critique the effectiveness of an SMS at an expert level. Holder of an appropriate training course in risk management techniques and have gained experience in the practical application of these techniques in an ATM environment. Additionally, have completed training in auditing skills and techniques.
A day in the life
Plan and conduct audits and inspections to provide regulatory oversight of allocated ANSPs in accordance with the requirements of UK legislation. Contribute to the Performance Based Oversight process as Technical Specialist to ensure intelligence on industry performance in order to support with regulatory oversight on the basis of safety performance. Assess competence of licensed operational staff at allocated units for the renewal or revalidation of ATS licenses, ratings and associated endorsements. Co-operate with other functional areas of AAA or SARG to achieve optimum safety regulation.
Assist when required in the incident investigation process by participating as a member of an investigations team. Working collaboratively with others to achieve the goals of AAA by achieving performance objectives agreed with the Principal Inspector ATM.

Air Traffic Controllers don’t have to physically ‘see’ an aircraft either visually or via radar to control it – Procedural control is controlling, applying separation, based on pilot or aircraft reported positions, levels and times.

Brief Description
Reporting to the Principal Inspector ATM, the Inspector Training is accountable for the regulatory oversight of Initial Training Organisations (ITOs) and in so doing, discharging the obligations devolved to the CAA by the UK Government.

Maintain and develop requirements/guidance for initial training organisations and unit training contained in appropriate CAPs ensuring compliance with applicable UK legislation and the UK ANO. Plan and conduct programme audits and inspections of initial training organisations for effective regulatory oversight of the initial training. Manage the UK Initial Training Organisations Forum to ensure compliance with UK/EU regulations and establish standardisation of UK national procedures and requirements for initial training Basic and Rating courses.

Inspector ATS Training doesn’t oversee training at the ATC Units themselves – they are responsible for the oversight of the ATC Colleges – this may be where a student ATCO meets the CAA for the first time.

Offer regulatory support to AAA by preparing and managing audit functions in direct support of the licensing and certification of aerodromes and heliports, along with applying regulatory knowledge and judgement in the processing of technical and administrative procedures within AAA.
Key Skills
Basic understanding of an approval and licensing process including relevant relevant UK and European legislation and knowledge of the CAA’s statutory roles and responsibilities. A day in the life
Notify, prepare and audit paperwork and management of pre- and post-audit data including liaising with aerodrome oversight technical experts and aerodrome license holders. Update and record safety critical aerodrome data and provide business support to aerodrome teams in respect of QPulse and CRM-EPT. Integrate and communicate the audit process across the regional offices ensuring standardisation and business continuity. Assist in the project management by making suggestions where necessary to ensure ongoing improvements to the effectiveness and efficiency of administrative functions.

Certify transcripts when required for legal reasons, representing SARG in Courts of Law in respect of Transcription matters as required. Liaise with Air Navigation Service Providers, AAIB, UKAB, IET and as directed to obtain radio, telephone and surveillance recordings. Produce copy recordings on site in the event of an Aircraft Accident, Serious Incident or where aerodrome or ATC Centre recording equipment is not compatible with the Transcription Unit replay equipment. Pursue investigations in liaison with the requesting authority. Maintain a detailed knowledge and experience of a wide range of complex recording and communications systems used by CAA and Air Navigation Service Providers. Advise and direct ANSPs and ATC Providers in respect of recording matters, legal requirements, systems and quality.

Brief Description
The job involves assessing Class 1/2/3/LAPL applicants against regulatory aeromedical standards set out in UK Part.MED and UK Part.ATCO.MED. Put simply, we assure that pilots and ATCOs have no medical conditions which would be unsafe when attempting to fly or control air traffic.
Key Skills
Data analysis skills, communicating with pilots and other clinicians, an appreciation for how physiology alters at altitude and how incapacitation may occur with an ability to quantify it in terms of a per annum percentage.
Entry Routes
6 years of medical school, followed by 2 years of foundation training, 3 years of GP training, thereafter significant experience in aviation medicine (with the Diploma in Aviation Medicine) and having worked as an AME to complete a minimum of 200 medicals.
A day in the life
Usually involves a mixture of casework assessments and meetings. We also work in aviation health, derive new guidance material and have oversight functions of AMEs. The work can be very varied but generally involves a lot of time spent reading reports and formulating risk assessments.

The UK cadre of medical assessors is very large by international standards. Many countries in Europe of a similar size do not have the workforce size or sub-specialist aeromedical expertise we have at the CAA.

Working with the Specialist Consultants, Medical Assessors and Aeromedical Nurses to quality check and send out the clinical memos and letters, sending out certificates when required. On clinic days working closely with the Specialist Consultants, applicants, SSC medical colleagues, phlebotomist to ensure smooth running of the clinic to make the applicant journey through this potentially stressful time for the applicant as seamless and stress free as possible.

Brief Description
Increase Air Safety and reduce the risk of mid air collision. The UKAB is the UK national body that evaluates all instances of aircraft getting too close together in UK Airspace. We take reports from all sectors of the aviation community, either through the mandatory or various voluntary reporting systems and we try to work out what happened. Once we gathered information and investigations from ATC, pilots, the military, we compile a report which is a comprehensive and objective summary of the incident as a whole. We then discuss this at the Board and determine the risk of collision and establish is there are any lessons that can be taken from the occurrence that will help others in their aviation activities.
